High Performance Ewe Nuts
The Sgt Dan High Performance Ewe Nuts are a high energy grain based feed designed for high-performance ewes. They are ideal for feeding pre-tupping and pre-lambing.
Manufactured in the form of a 10mm nut, Sgt Dan High Performance ewe nuts are practical and easy to feed.
Strategic feeding pre-tupping will help ewes achieve a high level of body condition at mating. This has been shown to increase ovulation rate and improve lambing percentage.
When fed pre-lambing, Sgt Dan High Performance Ewe Nuts provide a concentrated source of energy helping to ensure adequate energy intakes when feed intake may be limited due to physiological and forage factors. Insufficient energy intake pre-lambing can lead to weight loss and pregnancy toxaemia (twin lamb disease) in ewes as well as low lamb birth weight and poor survival.
Sgt Dan High Performance ewe nuts contain added iodine to aid fertility. Iodine also plays an important role in lamb survival. Added vitamin E and Selenium are included to improve health and immunity of both the ewe and her lambs. The inclusion of a comprehensive trace mineral premix provides the zinc, cobalt and other minerals and vitamins required by sheep fed typical New Zealand pasture.
Added magnesium oxide is included in the product as an aid in the prevention of grass stagers or hypomagnesaemia. When fed at 100g per ewe per day, the Sgt Dan High Performance Ewe Nuts provide 1.6g of added magnesium oxide per ewe.
Quick Facts About This Feed
- Feed Sgt Dan High Performance Ewe Nuts in conjunction with ad lib pasture, silage or other forage.

- Ensure adequate feeding space is provided for all animals to access nuts simultaneously to prevent over consumption.
- Exercise caution if high levels of other starchy feeds (e.g. wholecrop silage) are being at the same time.

Recommended Feeding Rate
The recommended feeding rate will vary depending on pasture or forage availability and ewe condition score. Feeding rate also differs for pre-mating and pre-lambing.
Pre-mating
- For optimum results feed Sgt Dan High Performance Ewe Nuts 2 to 3 weeks before mating starts.
- Feeding rate is typically around 100g per head per day.
- Where forage availability is low, animals are in poor condition or under extreme weather conditions feeding rates may be increased to 200g per head per day.
- Manage feeding rates to maintain a level plane of nutrition for at least 3 weeks after the rams have been removed.
Pre-lambing
- For optimum results Sgt Dan High Performance Ewe Nuts should be introduced to twin or triplet bearing ewes 6 weeks prior to lambing.
- Typical feeding rates for twin and triplet bearing ewes re-lambing are around 200g per ewe per day.
- Where forage availability is low, animals are in poor condition or under extreme weather conditions, feeding rates may be increased to 250g/head/day.
- Sgt Dan High Performance Ewe Nuts can be offered to single bearing ewes in poor condition, where forage availability is low or under extreme weather conditions. Limit intakes to prevent excessive weight gain.
- Do not allow ewes to become overfat. Target a BCS of 3 at lambing.
